Joe Biden Opposes Recreational Cannabis Legalization

Joe Biden

As time passes by, the USA seems closer and closer to legalizing cannabis. The question today is not so much ‘Are the United States going to legalize pot?’, but rather ‘by when?’.

Thursday’s debate was a great opportunity to hear what the different candidates from the Democratic Party had in mind.

While most of them support legalization, former Vice President Joe Biden announced his intention to decriminalize cannabis. However, he still firmly stands against nationwide legalization.

Biden also added that people convicted for marijuana offenses should not be deprived of their fundamental rights as US citizens: ‘When you finish your term in prison, you should be able to not only vote but have access to Pell grants and be able to get housing and move along the way’.

But other candidates feel like his reform is not ambitious. Hence, the former Vice President’s proposal faced a lot of criticism.
Sen. Cory Booker even argued that ‘the proud architect of a failed system is not the right person to fix it’

Sen. Cory Booker even argued that ‘the proud architect of a failed system is not the right person to fix it’.

Booker is right. Let’s not forget Biden’s role in advancing punitive drug laws during his time at Senate. During the 1990s, he notably authored the infamous Crime Bill which resulted in mass incarceration.

However, it seems like he changed his position on the issue. During Thursday’s debate, Biden argued that the country should invest more in ‘rehabilitation centers, not prisons’ and that ‘nobody should be in jail for a drug problem’.

He finally concluded by stating that ‘People who got in prison for marijuana should be out and their record should be expunged. Every single right should be returned’.

So… does Joe Biden deserve the support of the cannabis industry? Tell us what you think!
